WADDESDON October 4th 2014

On Saturday night Wycombe Astronomical Society enjoyed a second very successful evening hosting a Stargazing and Moon Watching Event for 80 guests at the very lovely National Trust Waddesdon Manor, near Aylesbury.

Sandy Giles gave an excellent lecture on the Moon in the Power House and twentyone members came along with their scopes and set up on the Parterre offering the guests superb views of the moon and other wonders of the wonderfully clear night sky.

Waddesdon had excellent reviews from the guests and we have been invited back for another event next March!

David Godwin kindly acted as our photographer for the night and took excellent photos. Click here to see them.

WAS Meeting Wed Oct 15th AGM + Lecture 7:30pm Start!

Dear Members,

Please note that in addition to our AGM on Wednesday 15th of October we will also be having a lecture by the excellent Bob Lambourne entitled 'Recent developments in studies of the the cosmic microwave background’

To help us fit everything in we would therefore like to start the AGM part promptly at 7:30pm and expect this part of the meeting to last no more than 45 minutes. We would really appreciate your support with this and If we have sufficient numbers early enough it means Bob’s talk will be able to start without delay.

With the AGM in mind if anyone would like to put themselves forward for a role on the committee, including that of the chairmanship please feel free to do so by responding to this email.  Please include your name, contact details and how you feel you would like to contribute to the running of the society.  Even if you are not certain of a specific role or title, we would still like to hear from you.

If you are unable to attend the AGM, and have a pressing matter or question that you would like to raise then please also feel free to respond to this email to raise it. If appropriate we will arrange for someone to ask the question on your behalf and will make sure you are informed about the response.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 15th for both the AGM and for Bob’s lecture.

Kind regards

The Committee

Dear all

Many thanks to all of you who have contacted me by e:mail and in person to say you would like to take part in a Moon Watch event for the National Trust’s Waddesdon Manor on October 4th.  For those who aren’t sure what its all about, Waddesdon are selling tickets to the public for an event where ticket holders will arrive at 6.00pm for a 2 course meal followed by a talk on the moon in the Power House by our Sandy Giles and afterwards observe on the Parterre with our members and their scopes.

We will need to arrive between 5 and 6 pm to get set up and Waddesdon will serve us a buffet of soup, sandwiches and cake prior to the visitors reaching us.

I will need to confirm the final list of our members coming a week before the event so that Waddesdon can ensure our members are allowed up to the main house to park and so the Chef knows how many to cater for.  I have got a list of those who expect to come but there have been some who have had to drop out and others who are still not sure.  Please can all of you who are definitely coming e:mail me by the 25th September so I can make up the definitive list.

For those without badges and who need a map of Waddesdon showing where you need to park -  they will be available on the signing in desk at the Lecture meeting on the 17th September.

I’m going to be away from the 9th to the 19th September hence this early e:mail.

I’m sure all those of you who came last time will confirm its a very enjoyable evening in wonderful surroundings.

Best wishes

Practical Session this evening - 5/9/2014 - The Moon

Hi everyone!

Tonight’s Practical Session is on observing the Moon. This largely in preparation for our two Moon Watch sessions to be held tomorrow and on Saturday. The weather doesn’t seem to be on our side and I fear we won’t get much observing done, though possibly tonight. If a few of you care to bring along small scopes and binoculars tonight that might be worthwhile. I have already prepared the lecture for our Waddesdon meeting in October and am standing by for our Moon Watch sessions if the weather doesn’t play ball. I was going to share some of this with you this evening (a) to rehearse it and (b) to check I have got everything right!

Chris Roland has some more objects for us to search out. At this stage I have no Gizmo of the Month – Moreton can’t make this evening’s meeting. Has anyone else got something to show?

See you this evening!
